How Long Do Sublimated Jerseys Last? Care Instructions and Durability Explained

Published September 28, 2026 · by Amy, Sales Manager

Short answer: a sublimated polyester jersey lasts 3–5 seasons of weekly washing without the print fading, cracking or peeling, because the colour is inside the fibre rather than on top of it – our fabrics test at SGS colour-fastness grade 4–5 (out of 5). What wears a kit out is heat, bleach and abrasion, not washing. Below is the care routine that keeps a kit looking new, how sublimation compares with screen print, heat transfer and embroidery for durability, what to expect from each fabric, and what to do about the common problems – pilling, snags, smells and stains.

Care instructions we print on the label

Step Do Don’t
Wash Machine wash cold or 30 °C, inside out, gentle cycle, mild detergent No bleach, no fabric softener (it coats the fibre and traps odour)
Load Wash with similar smooth garments Not with towels, jeans, zips or velcro – they abrade and pill the knit
Dry Hang or lay flat; tumble low if you must No hot tumble dry – heat is the one thing that damages polyester and any heat-transfer decoration
Iron Not needed – the fabric does not crease Never iron directly on a print or embroidery; if needed, low heat with a cloth, inside out
Store Dry fully before storing; fold or hang Don’t leave a wet kit in a bag – mildew and odour set within a day

How decoration methods age

Method After 50 washes Weak point
Sublimation No visible change – the dye is part of the fibre Only works on polyester; light colours can pick up dye from dark items if washed hot
Screen print Fine if cured properly; cheap prints crack at the fold lines Cracking with heat and stretching; thick ink feels stiff
Heat transfer (vinyl) Edges may lift, especially numbers on stretchy fabric Hot tumble drying and ironing; peeling at edges
Embroidery Very durable; threads keep colour Can snag; heavy crests pucker thin fabric
Tackle twill Very durable, the standard for baseball and basketball numbers Stitching around the edge can fray if caught

For a kit that must survive several seasons and many players, sublimation for the design plus embroidery or twill for a crest is the most durable combination. Our decoration guide covers cost and appearance.

Fabric by fabric

  • Interlock 160–180 gsm: the most durable jersey fabric; smooth face resists pilling; holds shape and length after washing (dimensional change under 3 % in SGS testing).
  • Bird-eye / micro mesh: lighter and cooler; slightly more prone to snags on rough surfaces (astroturf slides, velcro). Choose interlock for goalkeepers and rugby.
  • Piqué (polos): a textured knit, very hard-wearing, hides small marks; polyester piqué does not shrink, poly-cotton blends may shrink 2–3 % on a hot wash.
  • Spandex blends (compression, sleeveless tops): keep stretch for years if kept away from heat; hot drying is what kills elastane.
  • Tricot / fleece (jackets): long-lived; brushed inside may pill lightly with abrasive washing.

Common problems and fixes

Odour that survives washing. Polyester holds body oils. Use a sports detergent or add half a cup of white vinegar to the rinse; skip softener; dry fully. An occasional cold soak in oxygen bleach (not chlorine) is safe on sublimated colours.

Pilling. Caused by rubbing against rough items in the wash or on the pitch. Wash inside out with similar garments; a fabric shaver removes existing pills without harming the print.

Snags and pulled threads. Do not cut them; ease the loop back through with a needle from inside.

Grass and mud stains. Pre-treat with liquid detergent, cold water; avoid hot water, which sets protein stains. Sublimated colours are not affected by stain removers that are safe for polyester.

Colour transfer. White or light kits washed with new dark cotton items can pick up loose dye. Wash lights separately for the first few washes of any new dark garment.

Faded numbers on an old kit. If the numbers were heat transfer, they can be replaced; sublimated numbers do not fade, so a “faded” sublimated number is usually surface soiling – a cold soak brings it back.

How long a kit lasts, in practice

Amateur clubs that wash weekly typically replace a sublimated kit after 3–5 seasons for reasons of style or sponsor change rather than wear. School PE kits handed down for 3 years show wear at the hem and cuffs before the print. Elastic waistbands are usually the first component to tire after several years; shorts can be re-ordered separately (US$2.50) without replacing jerseys. Keeping your print files on file with us means a matching replacement is always available – see how we keep re-orders consistent.

Test results behind these claims

Our standard fabrics are tested by SGS for colour fastness to washing (ISO 105-C06) and rubbing (ISO 105-X12) at grade 4–5, dimensional change after washing under 3 %, and fibre content. Reports are available per fabric on request. The rating scale runs 1 (poor) to 5 (no change); 4–5 means no visible loss after the standard wash test.

FAQ

Will the print crack or peel? Sublimated prints cannot crack or peel; there is no ink layer to lift. Heat-transfer names, numbers or sponsor logos can peel if hot-dried.

Can I wash the kit at 60 °C to disinfect it? 40 °C with a sports detergent is enough; 60 °C will not damage sublimated polyester but shortens the life of elastic and any heat-transfer parts.

Does the fabric shrink? 100 % polyester does not shrink in normal washing; poly-cotton polos may shrink 2–3 % on a hot wash.

Do white kits go grey? Only if washed with dark items or with too little detergent; wash whites together.

Can you print the care instructions in our language? Yes – the care label is printed in the language your market requires, with the symbols.
